Do you think that car windows should be replaced with plexiglas?

Plexiglas or Acrylic glass is see through and similiar to glass but when hit it is extremely tough glass that can survive an impact. It's is used around hockey rinks to protect the fans watching, it is used in airplane windows, and aquariums. Because of its strong properties do you think it should be replaced and used on car windshields and windows to protect the drivers and passengers if they are be in a hail storm or if they are going to be shot through the window?

Yes that would make cars safer.
Right choice
No, cars are fine the way they are.

First, I refer you to attempts to use of plexiglass in house windows.
This failed due to properties of plexiglass.
Next, I refer you to fact that current safety glass
was developed in 1970's and not implemented until 1980's or in some cases until 1990's. This glass IS designed to shatter.
Current estimates are "still need 50 years of research into plexiglass to reach stability of glass"
Next, at even low speeds, i.e. 12mph, a windshield of plexiglass ripples like the surface of water wi

They will NEVER use plexiglass over safety glass because its a dumb idea - it will break under high impact, and it scratches too easily - your winshield wipers wouls scratch up the windshield if there was any dirt on the plexiglass when you used them! - if you voted yes then you don't know anything about plexiglass

i think you are right. people do need to have a way to break out of the car in case on an emergency too. to have the passenger or door windows remain glass would be safer.

im for seeing plexiglas on windshields and back glass..but side windows remain glass...because if your trapped ...you could break those to escape..

i feel it would be safer then having glass shatter on us or being thrown from a car a bit more harder.

oisin.k.s, clearly you can't read. the question actually says, "car windshields and windows," which would make adia r's comment correct, and yours both pointless and rude.

have a nice day though...

Glass is far from a perfect substance for car windows, BUT plexiglass is far worse.
While plexiglass has a few good qualities,
ANY of its BAD qualities are far worse than
glass.

Plexiglass melts at fairly low temps,
i.e. when the car is parked in the sun;
Plexiglass distorts easily,
i.e. warping at speed of 20kph (12mph);
Plexiglass changes colour and clearity over time,
i.e. 2 months old in sun, is yellow and can't see thru;
Plexiglass scratches easily,
and ...

I chose Plexi because, most people get injured from mainly the glass shattering. There was a motorcycle accident, the guy got killed because the glass from the car shattered into him. His luck, one went straight through his chest into his chest. Another one went into his leg and cut an artery. But he didn't die from the glass though, he died from blood loss.

The plexi is strong but does have its breaking point. It doesn't shatter but does crack leaving long sharp pieces of plastic. Imagine an impact that creates these long sharp pieces which can fly off. Glass simply shatters. I will take the glass.

ojoose wrote exactly what I was thinking. While this is a good idea in theory, the practical aspect of things (for typical commuter use) is basically useless. And the question does say "on windshields and windows."

no, ever thought of being trapped and need to get out? the strength need to break Plexiglas or Acrylic is super human. I know because I saw superman break it before and it didn't look easy for him.

Sure a lot of uneducated yes answers.
i agree with presson
Glass in cars works for multiple purposes. It allows a breakout point if stuck in a vehicle, it allows part of the collapsible properties to help prevent sucha hard hit. While doing this it also allows visibility with low scratching efects. Acrylic glass (lexan or plexi) scratches easy, melts and drips when hot and is a lot harder to break free. It also breaks in jagged pieces and does not break down like regular glass. I will probably loose this bet but I say no Leave it alone.

nope i agree with the glass that exists now... rescue workers already have a tougher time getting to victim of car crashes due to the dificulty of getting through the materials the car is made of. plus if you were in a car that got into an accident and landed you in a body of water wouldn't you want to be in a car with breakable glass..,. Bottom Line don't turn your car into a death trap... the key is balance, not too hard not too soft
